In the past during the golden age, monarchs in Spain not only facilitated wars with their wealth, but also commissioning and collecting works of art. That patrimony itself is what has made Spain what it is today: a paradise for all museum lovers. More works of art have been added since that early period, even with modern works of sculpture and painting. The museums themselves are also quite stunning because of the architectural designs that can be witnessed.

In Madrid, look out for cento de arte Sofia. The collections here focus on modern masters of Spain. They are Miro, Dali and Picasso. The monumental Guernica, a Picasso work is the centerpiece. Museo el Prado is yet another good museum in Madrid. Its location is in a neoclassical kind of building in an elegant boulevard. There are European as well as Spanish masterpieces. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is also in Madrid. The collection has some 1,600 paintings. They are the artworks of Caravaggio, Titian, Durer and Rembrandt. Modern and impressionist periods are covered.

Museo Picasso in Barcelona is a great museum to visit. The works of Picasso dominate the collections. There are some 3,600 Picasso works in the museum. Also in Barcelona, look out for Museo Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. It is abbreviated as MNAC. It has collections of devotional culture as well as Romanesque frescoes. Most of these are from the Pyrenees. There are also some from other parts of the world.

Fundacio Miro is also in Barcelona. Here you will find 11,000 Miro works. They include prints, oils, drawings, textiles and sculptures. The museum was designed by a friend of Miro.

In Valencia, look out for Museo de Bellas Artes. It is at the edge of the royal gardens. This museum has the finest of collections in all of Spain. Masterworks of Goya, Ribera, Ribalta and Velazquez can be seen here. There is also a gallery dedicated to Joaquin Sorolla.

Museo Guggenheim is in Bilbao and definitely worth a visit. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the museum. There are Spanish and international artworks within the museum. The works of contemporary and modern sculptors and painters have been showcased here. A trip to Barcelona and Bilbao combination is always a great idea.

Visit Museo de Bellas Artes in the Seville area. It is second only to Prado museum. The works of Zurbaran, el Greco and Murillo are displayed here. There are religious sculptures of the baroque type as well as gothic works. Sevillian work is also on display. You can use the train from Madrid to make the trip easier.
